ST. LOUIS, MO — Four different players scored goals and Hannah Larson had two more corner kick assists, Thursday night, as the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team won its 2023 home opener, 4-1, over visiting Creighton.

It was a hot night at Hermann Stadium, which is why game time was pushed back an hour. But the heat on the field didn’t stop the Billikens, who dominated the action from start to finish.

SLU outshot Creighton 17-5, with eight of those Billiken shots being on goal to just two for the Bluejays. Saint Louis also had eight corner kicks, which led to two of its goals, while Creighton had just three.

Seniors Lyndsey Heckel and Caroline Kelly, and juniors Emily Gaebe and Hannah Sawyer were the goal scorers for Saint Louis on Thursday. Heckel and Sawyer scored on the corner kicks by Larson. Kelly and Gaebe both scored on breakaways.

Heckel’s goal was her first of the season, while Kelly, Gaebe, and Sawyer all picked up their second scores of the year. Kelly’s goal was the 21st of her college career, which now gives her sole possession 10th place on the Billiken all-time list.

Larson’s two assists gives her four on the season, which is already a career high for the redshirt junior from Columbia, Mo. It also has her tied with several other players for the NCAA lead in assists.

The Billikens are now 2-1 on the season and will go for their third straight win on Sunday, when they’ll host cross-state rival Kansas City at Hermann Stadium. That match is set to kick off at 1 p.m.
