CLAYTON, MO — Junior guard Hayden Doyle hit a fadeaway jumper with 47 seconds to lift the Washington University men’s basketball team to a 61-58 win over the University of Chicago, Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both clubs at the WashU Field House.
The Senior Day victory lifted WashU’s overall season record to 18-7 and its UAA league mark to 8-6.
WashU will now wait to see if it has qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Heading into Saturday, the Bears were the No. 1 ranked team in Region VIII.
The official tournament selections will be announced on NCAA.com, Monday at noon.
On Saturday, the Bears found themselves in a dogfight with the Maroons. Chicago grabbed a four-point lead at 52-48 with nine minutes left in the game. But WashU’s stout defense held the visitors to just six points the rest of the game.
Chicago scored its last basket with 3:28 left in the game. The Maroons led 58-55 at that point, but jumpers by Kyle Beedon, then Doyle gave WashU the lead.
WashU forced a missed shot and a turnover on Chicago’s final possessions and squeezed in a layup with Beedon with 17 seconds left for the final points of the game.
Chicago had the final possession, but was never even able to get a shot off, as WashU wouldn’t let any Maroon players on the court get open.
Doyle finished the game with 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Calvin Kapral also scored 12 points, while Beedon finished with 10.
Prior to the game, the Bears honored their two seniors – Jabari Chiphe and Chidera Nwokolo as well as All-Purpose Personnel Sarah Ambrose. Chiphe was also presented the Robert L. Pearce award, which is an award established to honor and recognize special characteristics of commitment and perseverance.
