CLAYTON, MO — The Washington University men’s basketball team earned its third straight win, Sunday afternoon, when it defeated Bradeis University, 56-53, in a UAA league game at the WashU Field House.
WashU led by as many as 17 points midway through the second half, but Brandeis managed to cut that deficit to a single point with 29 seconds left.
Fortunately for the Bears, Brandeis’ Adean Using missed a key free throw with 10 seconds left and WashU was able to grab the rebound, then make a pair of free throws of its own to extend its lead to three.
The Judges were able to fire up a last-second three-point attempt to tie, but the shot hit the rim and didn’t go in, allowing WashU to claim the win.
The Bears are now 17-7 on the season and 7-6 in UAA play. Brandeis is 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the conference.
Junior guards Kyle Beedon and Hayden Doyle led the way for WashU. Beedon had 13 points, including three three-pointers, while Doyle added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Another key contributor for WashU was sophomore guard Yogi Oliff, who for the second straight game pulled down 17 rebounds. He also scored eight points and dished out six assists.
WashU built its lead with a strong defensive first half. The Bears held Brandeis to 32 percent shooting (8-of-25) and forced nine turnovers.
Doyle hit a three-pointer with 11:33 left in the game to put WashU up 47-30, which seemed like a comfortable lead. But that’s when Brandeis began to chip away at WashU’s edge.
The Judges went on a 9-2 run to make the score 49-43. Then a bit later, went on an 8-0 run that made the score 54-53 with less than a minute remaining.
WashU had the ball, but Using made a steal and forced a foul that sent him to the free-throw line for a pair of one-and-one free throws to could have given Brandeis the lead. He missed the first one, which meant he wouldn’t get a chance at a second one.
Doyle grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled by Using. He went to the free throw line and sank both shots to put the game away for WashU, which will close out its regular season on Saturday, when its hosts the University of Chicago.
Tip off for that matchup is set for 3 p.m.
