CLAYTON, MO — The No. 2-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team defeated Sewanee College, 4-0, in an NCAA Division III Tournament second round match to advance to the Sweet 16 next weekend. It is the 18th time in school history that WashU has reached the Sweet 16.
Sophomore midfielder Grace Ehlert scored a pair of first-half goals — her sixth and seventh tallies of the season — to lead the Bears past the Tigers. Jessica Greven and Madeline Allburn added two insurance goals in the second half for the 4-0 victory.
Ehlert scored her first goal of the game at the 20:20 mark on a pass from sophomore Ella Koleno. The ball bounced between the crossbar and the turf and found its way into the net.
Ehlert scored again, unassisted, in the 33rd minute of play to make it a 2-0 game for WashU. She is now tied for a team-leading seven goals.
In the 74th minute, Sewanee committed a foul in the box resulting in a penalty kick for the Bears. Greven put in her fourth penalty kick of the season for a 3-0 WashU lead.
Finally, in the 85th minute, first-year Julia Moore sent a hard pass towards goal and Allburn tapped it in for the fourth goal of the game to secure the 4-0 win and send the Bears to the Sweet 16.
WashU dominated on both ends, registering 24 total shots with 12 on goal while holding the Tigers to just two shots, none of which were on goal.
It is WashU’s 18th shutout of the season which tops the NCAA.
WashU will play Calvin University in the NCAA Tournament sectionals. The Bears will host the match at Francis Olympic Field on Friday, November 17. Opening kick is scheduled for 11 a.m.
