ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University women’s basketball team picked up its first win of the new season, Sunday afternoon, when it defeated the Missouri Tigers, 91-85, in a non-conference game at Chaifetz Arena.
The Billikens did it behind a dominant fourth quarter, in which the home team outscored the visitors 36-21. Missouri had just won the third quarter, 25-14, to take a 64-57 lead heading into the final stanza, but Saint Louis turned up the defense and hit several clutch shots to storm back and win the game at the end.
It was just the second time in school history that Saint Louis had beaten Missouri in women’s basketball.
Peyton Kennedy scored 21 points and made nine-of-13 shots, but the stars of the game were Brooklyn Gray and CamreƩ Clegg, who both came off the bench to score 22 points apiece to lead the Billikens.
Gray made six-of-11 shots and a game-high 10 free throws, and Clegg was five-of-eight from the floor, which included four-of-six from three-point land.
The fourth quarter is where SLU took over the game. The Billikens made nine-of-11 shots and just refused to let Missouri, which led for most of the game, to run away from them.
The key point came in the final three minutes. After Missouri’s Grace Slaughter hit a three-pointer to put the Tigers up 77-71, Saint Louis stormed back with a 16-1 run to go ahead.
Clegg hit a three to get things rolling, then Tierra Simon added a layup to pull Saint Louis within a point. That’s when Kennedy took over.
First, she made a layup to give Saint Louis its first lead of the fourth quarter. Then after Missouri tied it with a free throw, Kennedy hit a spinning, fall away jump shot with the shot clock expiring to give the Billikens the lead for good.
Gray hit five free throws down the stretch and Clegg hit four to make sure Missouri would not be able to mount a comeback of its own.
Kyla McMakin had 15 points and Julia Martinez had 11 assists, as SLU’s efficient offense proved too much for a Missouri team that shot 50 percent for the game and made 41 percent of its three-pointers.
The difference was SLU’s fourth quarter, where the Billikens shot 82 percent from the floor, 53 percent from three, and 82 percent from the free throw line.
Saint Louis is now 1-1 on the season and will play its second straight in-state opponent on Wednesday, when it will host Missouri State at Chaifetz Arena. Tip off for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
Missouri is 2-1 on the year and will play its next game on Tuesday night, when the Tigers will host North Alabama.
