ST. CHARLES, MO — It took a while to get going, but the Saint Louis University baseball team continued its blue hot start to the 2024 season on Wednesday, when it traveled across town and defeated Lindenwood University, 10-2, in a mid-week game at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.
Saint Louis has scored at least 10 runs in each of its games on its way to a 4-0 record. It’s the first time SLU has begun the year with four straight wins since 2017.
On Wednesday, the Billiken bats started slow, as the club only managed two hits and two runs through the first five innings. Beginning in the sixth though, SLU got going and turned what had been a tight pitcher’s duel into an early season rout over a young Lindenwood team.
The key sequence began with one out in the top of the sixth, Patrick Clohisy reached on a bunt single and teammate Cole Smith followed with a walk. That’s when senior Tyler Fogarty lined a single to left center that gave the Billikens a 3-2 lead.
Later, Drew Winters singled home Smith, and Fogarty scored on a defensive error to put Saint Louis up 5-2.
In the seventh inning, Clohisy tripled home a run, then scored on a Fogarty triple to make the score 7-2. The Billikens added a single run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Clohisy finished with two hits and two runs scored, as did Fogarty, who also had two RBIs. Leadoff man Hayden Moore had a hit, a walk, stole two bases, and scored two runs as well.
On the mound, Dawson Smith started the game for Saint Louis and gave up the two Lindenwood runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Jackson Yarberry and Owen Kelly combined to shutout the Lions over the final six innings of the game. Yarberry (1-0) got the win, after going four innings and giving up no runs, and just three hits, while striking out seven. Kelly went two innings and allowed just one hit, with two strikeouts.

Lindenwood actually outhit Saint Louis on the day. The Lions finished with 11 base knocks, while the Billikens had just nine.
Leadoff man Colin Shea led the way for the Lions. He had three hits and an RBI.
Junior first baseman Filip Sarota had two hits and a run scored, while junior designated hitter Mitch Cummins had a hit, an RBI, and scored Lindenwood’s other run.
Sophomore pitcher Aaron Jungers (0-1) took the loss for the Lions. He gave up two earned runs on four hits and two walks, while also striking out four in 2 1/3 innings work.
Both teams will be back on the road this weekend.
SLU will be in Tennessee for a three-game set against Western Illinois. Lindenwood will be in Arkansas for a series against Arkansas State.
