ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team kept its red-hot winning and blue-hot hitting going on Tuesday, as it registered 14 hits, including three home runs in a 9-4 win over crosstown rival Lindenwood in a non-conference game at the Billiken Sports Complex.
Saint Louis, which has now won six straight games and is 34-11 on the season, won its third straight ballgame over Lindenwood this season. The Billikens defeated the Lions 10-2 on February 21 and 3-1 on April 23.
Tuesday’s matchup, which was the first one of three at SLU, featured lots of dynamite hitting by the Billikens. In fact, every SLU player but one, that batted in the game had at least one hit.
Cole Smith, Brenden Stressler, and Austin Neuweg had two hits apiece. But the big blows were the home runs hit by Drew Winters, Chase Beattie, and Tyler Fogarty.
Fogarty got the deep blasts started when he hit his eighth homer of the year, over the left field wall, in the bottom of the second inning to put Saint Louis up 2-0. Winters added a solo shot in the third — his team-leading 11th of the year — to make it 3-0.
Stressler drove in two runs on a single, later that inning to put the Billikens up 5-0.
Lindenwood battled back though, and got to within 6-4 on a two-run single by James Jett in the fourth and a two-run double by Dawson Hokuf in the seventh. But Beattie put the game away for Saint Louis, when he launched a three-run shot over the wall in center to make the score 9-4.
On the mound, SLU used five pitchers, with senior Henry Littman (2-0) getting the win, after tossing three innings and giving up two runs on five hits, with one walk and one strikeout.
Junior Jack Weber pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings to keep Lindenwood at bay and earn a save. The righthander and native St. Louisan gave up one hit and one walk, but also struck out two.
Saint Louis — the current first place leaders of the Atlantic 10 Conference — will play its final home series of the season this weekend, when it hosts second place Dayton in a three-game set on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
The Billikens, who are 13-5 in league play, own a half-game lead over the Flyers, who are 12-5 in the A-10 this year. First pitch on Friday is set for 3 p.m.
