ST. LOUIS, MO — Saint Louis University and Indiana University-Indianapolis played to a 1-1 draw in an NCAA men’s soccer game at Hermann Stadium, Monday night.
Both goals were scored in the second half. IU-Indy scored first, in the 62 minute and nearly closed out the game for what would have been an upset win on the road.
But Saint Louis got a goal from senior Luis Lara in the 82nd minute to tie the game and set up its 1-1 outcome.
The Billikens controlled the offense for much of the night, but IU-Indy’s defense kept making just enough clutch plays to keep SLU from scoring.
Saint Louis outshot IU-Indy 19-7 and generated 11 corner kicks to the Jaguars’ 3. Lara had seven shots in the game — two on goal — but the one that mattered was the chance he got following a pass from teammate Seth Anderson.
The two worked a perfect give-and-go, which put Lara inside the IU-Indy box with two defenders near him, but neither close enough to stop him. Once he got into position, Lara then whipped a quick shot to the back corner that went past the IU-Indy goalkeeper for a goal that tied the game.
It was Lara’s first goal of the season and first as a Billiken, after he transferred to SLU this year following four years at Stetson University in Florida.
Saint Louis is now 1-1-1 on the season, while IU-Indy is 2-1-1.
The Billikens will return to action on Sunday, September 8, when they’ll play their annual rivalry game for the Bronze Boot against SIU-Edwardsville. That game will be played at CITYPARK and will kickoff at 6:30 p.m.
The women’s teams from both schools will also play that day. That game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
