EDWARDSVILLE, IL — The Saint Louis University baseball team set a new school record for home runs in a single game on Tuesday, when it launched seven dingers at Roy E. Lee Field in the Billikens’ 13-8 win over SIU-Edwardsville.
The previous record was six home runs, which was last set in 2004 in a game against Eastern Illinois.
On Tuesday, six different Billikens hit long balls, including Patrick Clohisy, who bashed two, along with teammates Ethan Sitzman, Tyler Fogarty, Drew Winters, Graham Mastros, and Austin Neuweg, who all hit one.
The seven home runs give Saint Louis 20 on the season, which is tied for third most of any team in the country. Winters leads the Billikens with four homers this season, while Neuweg, Fogarty, and leadoff man Hayden Moore each have three.
Clohisy’s two homers on Tuesday — he also had three doubles and three triples — were his first two homers of the season. The sophomore right fielder and St. Louis native got the bomb barrage started with a solo shot in the top of the first.
Fogarty and Neuweg both homered in the second. Neuweg’s shot was a two-run blast that made the score 4-0. Cole Smith added a three-run double to put the Billikens up 7-0.
Winters homered in the third to make the score 8-0. SIUE scored five runs in its half of the third to pull back within 8-5.
But SLU wasn’t done. Mastros hit a solo shot to left in the top of the fifth, which was later followed by a blast by Sitzman to make the score 11-5.
Clohisy hit his second homer of the day in the top of the eighth to put the Billikens up 13-5. SIUE scored a couple runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the victory was Saint Louis’ right from the start.
Dawson Smith got the start and win for the Billikens on the mound, while Owen Kelly, Jack Weber, Josh Cunningham and Evan Gray also made appearances. Smith pitched two complete innings, facing 13 batters and striking out three.
The Tuesday afternoon win moves SLU to 8-0 on the season for the first time dating back to the program’s 1966 season which saw the Billikens squad, coached by Roy Lee, start 9-0.
SLU opens its home slate this weekend hosting Le Moyne at the Billiken Sports Center for a three-game series beginning Friday. First pitch between the Billikens and Dolphins is set for 3 p.m.
