ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team earned its largest Atlantic 10 Conference win in program history when it defeated the University of Massachusetts, 18-1, in a game Friday night at the Billiken Sports Complex.
Saint Louis banged out 14 hits and drew 11 walks on its way to what also proved to be its largest win of the season. The Billikens beat South Dakota State 17-2, back in March. But Friday’s contest was unlike any other game all season.
Every SLU starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Senior second baseman Ethan Sitzman led the way with three hits, three runs batted in, and one run scored. Sitzman also had two stolen bases.
Teammates Ian Blazier and Hank Gomric both had two hits. Blazier’s big night also included five RBIs and three runs scored. Gomric had two RBIs and a run scored.
Junior designated hitter Max McGwire reached base all five times he batted, with a hit and four walks. He also scored a run all five times that he reached base.
Fellow junior Ian Halverson homered in the seventh. It was his fourth home run of the season.

On the mound, sophomore Owen Kelly earned his third straight win and improved his personal record to 5-2 by going a career-best seven innings and only allowing one run on five hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.
Teammates Richie Cimpric and Justin Lee each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.
The Billikens are now 26-19 on the season and 14-8 in conference play. UMass is 6-16 in the conference and 13-27-1 overall.
SLU is tied for third place with Saint Joseph’s and Davidson, and all three teams are one-game behind George Mason and Rhode Island for first place in the A-10 standings.
Depending on what happens around the conference, the Billikens could grab a piece of first place as soon as Saturday, when it hosts Game 2 of its series against UMass. First pitch at the Billiken Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
