ST. LOUIS, MO — It was senior night at Hermann Stadium on Tuesday. And the Saint Louis University men’s soccer team celebrated the occasion in style.

The Billikens, who were 6-1-3 in their last 10 games, put on quite a show in their final home game of the season. Saint Louis bombed and blasted visiting Blackburn College to the tune of an 8-0 win in front of a loud crowd of hectic Billiken soccer fans.

With the win, SLU is now 8-4-3 on the season and will finish the regular season with a 7-0-2 mark at home.

Sophomore forward CJ Coppola and junior midfielder Tanner Anderson both scored two goals to lead the Billiken offense. Another sophomore, Matthew Wrobel had a goal and two assists, and a third sophomore, Mads Stistrup Petersen added three assists, as Saint Louis scored six goals in the first half, then added two more in the second.

Coppola, who leads the Billikens with seven goals on the year, scored both his goals on Tuesday in the first 14 minutes of the game. The first came in the 7th minute, on a set up by Wrobel. And the second came in the 14th minute, on a similar play as the first, but this time it was set up by Jack Mila.

Max Floriani and Wrobel scored goals in the next few minutes to make it 4-0, before Anderson netted his first, in the 27th minute, to make the score 5-0.

Those tallies proved more than enough for Saint Louis, which outshot Blackburn 31-1.

Goalkeepers Jeremi Abonnel and Greg L’Hommedieu each played a half to share the shutout.

Tuesday’s contest was just a tune-up for SLU, which will now turn its focus to the huge game it has this weekend at Saint Joseph’s.

The Billikens, who are currently tied for second place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings, will play the Hawks on Saturday and need a win for themselves and either a loss or tie by first place Davidson, who is playing Rhode Island on Saturday, to win the regular season league title.

Saint Louis also needs at least a tie to assure itself of hosting a first round game of the A-10 Conference Tournament, which will begin next weekend.

The schedule and game times for the A-10 Tournament will be set once the teams that qualify are all set, following Saturday’s games.

SLU could finish as high as first or as low as fifth, so the outcome of Saturday’s games around the league are very important.
