RICHMOND, VA — Emily Gaebe scored early and Emily Puricelli made six saves to make it stand up as the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team defeated VCU, 1-0, in a tight-knit Atlantic 10 Conference game at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

The win allowed Saint Louis, which now has an eight-game unbeaten streak, to remain atop the A-10 standings at the halfway point of the league schedule. SLU is now 9-2-2 on the season and has a 4-0-1 league record, while VCU slipped to 3-7-3 and 2-3-1.

On what proved to be the game-winning play, Gaebe caught up to a long pass from Abbie Miller in the 9th minute, and, from just inside the box, sent a one-time, left-footed shot past VCU goalkeeper Allison Karpovich. The goal was Gaebe’s team-high sixth of the season and also tied her for the A-10 league lead.

From that point on, Saint Louis concentrated on not letting VCU score, which they did, thanks to excellent defense and Puricelli’s superior goalkeeping. The senior from St. Louis recorded her sixth shutout of the season and fourth in five conference matches. It was also the 34th shutout of Puricelli’s career.

The Billikens will be back in action, next Sunday, when they’ll host their annual Senior Day game at Hermann Stadium. SLU will take on Richmond that day, with opening kick scheduled for 1 p.m.
