LOGAN, UT — The No. 21-ranked Saint Louis University women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2023 season, Sunday afternoon, when it went on the road and defeated Utah State 2-0.

Saint Louis scored on a pair of corner kicks, one in the first half and another in the second, and held Utah State scoreless for the full 90 minutes, in what was the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Senior Sophia Stram netted the first in the 33rd minute for her fourth career game-winning goal, and junior Hannah Sawyer tacked on an insurance marker in the 65th minute. Fellow junior Hannah Larson assisted on both goals — her first two assist game of her career.

Billiken goalkeeper Emily Puricelli made six saves to notch the shutout. It was the 30th shutout of her career.

The victory was the 49th of Puricelli’s career, which makes her the new all-time leader in Saint Louis women’s soccer history.

SLU will return home for a stretch of four consecutive games in St. Louis, beginning with the 2023 home opener on Thursday, August 24, when the Billikens will host Creighton. Game time at Hermann Stadium is set for 5 p.m., and will be followed by the SLU men’s home opener, which will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
