COLUMBIA, MO — The No. 23-ranked Saint Louis University women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the season, Sunday night, when it defeated the University of Missouri, 2-0, in a game at Mizzou’s Walton Soccer Stadium.
The Billikens got a first half goal from Hannah Sawyer and a second half score from Emily Gaebe, then turned on its defense to shut the Tigers down the rest of the night.
Unbeaten Saint Louis is now 1-0-2 on the year, while Missouri fell to 1-2-1.
The contest was the first between SLU and Mizzou since 1998, and it proved to be a fun event, as a crowd of just under 1,000 fans attended and the game was televised live on SEC Network+.
The Tigers controlled the action in the early going and had two solid scoring chances, including a header by Kylee Simmons that hit the SLU crossbar.
But the Billikens were the first to actually find the back of the net, when Sawyer broke free after receiving a pass from teammate Ashley Miller. The senior from Hamilton, Ohio, which is near Cincinnati, outran a Mizzou defender, then drilled a shot past Mizzou goalkeeper Bella Hollenback to put Saint Louis on the board, up 1-0.
The score stayed that way until the 82nd minute, when Hope Kim made a pass to Gaebe, who then overpowered a Mizzou defender for the ball, and slid a shot past Hollenback to make the score 2-0.
Sawyer’s goal was her first of the season. Gaebe’s goal was her second and the 34th of her career. Miller and Kim are both true freshmen, playing their third game as college players, and the assists for both were their first collegiate points.
Emily Puricelli made four saves in goal for the Billikens to earn her 68th career win and 42 shutout. Hollenback made five saves for Mizzou, which outshot SLU 11-10.
The Billikens will look to keep their unbeaten string going, when they get back on the pitch on Thursday, with a road game against Missouri State. That contest will begin at 6 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
SLU’s next home game is on Sunday, September 1, when the Billikens will host No. 3-ranked Penn State, in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 game, in which the Nittany Lions eliminated the Billikens in a 4-3 double overtime thriller.
Missouri’s next game is also on Thursday and also on the road. The Tigers will head to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on Miami. The Tigers’ next home game will be on September 8 against Southeast Missouri State.
