ST. LOUIS, MO — The No. 15-ranked Saint Louis University men’s soccer team suffered its second straight loss on Saturday, when it gave up two late goals to rival Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the annual Bronze Boot game, which this year was played at CITYPARK, home of the city’s new professional soccer team, St. Louis City SC.

The loss to SIUE was the first for SLU since 1982. The Billikens had won or tied 21 straight matches against the Cougars to keep possession of the trophy.

A crowd of 8.574 watched Saint Louis dominate the action, as it outshot SIUE 14 to 6. But the Billikens just couldn’t find the back of the net, while the Cougars managed to pull off two sensational plays that led to goals and a historic eventual victory for the SIUE program.

The Cougars went ahead in the 50th minute when Mitchell Murphy scored. Teammate Nic Muench made it 2-0 SIUE in the 73rd minute. SLU had a couple of scoring chances in the final 17 minutes, but couldn’t finish, and could only watch as SIUE celebrated its win.

For the season, Saint Louis is 1-2, but will look to get back on the winning track when it returns to action on Friday, when the club will travel to Dallas for a match against SMU. That contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.

SLU’s next home game is slated for Tuesday, September 19, when the Billikens will host Oral Roberts at Hermann Stadium. That contest will also kick off at 7 p.m., and will also be streamed live on ESPN+.
