ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University men’s basketball team scored eight points in the final 42 seconds of regulation, including a three-pointer with 1 second left to force overtime in its Atlantic 10 Conference matchup against first place George Mason on Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the visiting Patriots outscored the Billikens 6-4 in overtime to pull out 76-74 victory, in front of a loud crowd of 6,237 at Chaifetz Arena.
Saint Louis trailed for most of the game and were down by as many as 10 points on two different occasions in the second half. But SLU rallied to tie the score at 56 with 6:54 left and at 59 with 4:22 remaining. Each time though, George Mason made a key bucket to go back ahead.
That’s what set up the final minute of regulation scenario, where the Billikens trailed 66-62, but went down by six after a pair of George Mason free throws.
SLU’s Gibson Jimerson made a sprawling three-pointer to pull the Billikens within three. Then after a George Mason turnover Isaiah Swope added two free throws to make the score 68-67.
George Mason’s Jared Billups made two free throws of his own to put the Patriots back up by three with 10 seconds remaining. But SLU had just enough time for Swope to get open and drain a three-pointer to send the game to overtime.

In OT, both teams looked very tired on the court and struggled to score. George Mason got a three-pointer and three made free throws for its points.
SLU could only manage a couple more free throws and a layup by Swope. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough as George Mason was able to escape with the win.
The win improved George Mason’s record to 20-5 overall and 11-1 in conference play, while SLU fell to 14-11 and 7-5.
Billiken senior Robbie Avila led the club with 27 points and added nine rebounds. Swope finished with 22 points.
Saint Louis will be back in action on Friday, when it travels to Chicago to take on Loyola Chicago. That game will tip off at 6 p.m., and will be televised on ESPN2.
