ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team got roughed up a bit, in a 13-4 loss on Saturday at the Billiken Sports Complex against the University of Cincinnati.
The visiting Bearcats banged out 13 hits and scored 13 runs to even the weekend series one to one against the Billikens.
On Saturday, two Cincinnati batters had three hits and three drove in three runs each, as the Bearcats turned an early lead into a whopping win late.
Saint Louis used seven pitchers on Saturday and each of them gave up at least one run. That was the first time that happened to the Billikens this season, in a year where the pitching staff has mostly pitched well.
Cincinnati took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but SLU matched that run with an RBI double by Tyler Fogarty. That was just about the end of any fun for the day for Saint Louis.
The Bearcats scored three runs in the top of the third, including a two-run home run by Josh Kross — it was his fourth homer of the weekend. They then added two more runs in the fourth to go ahead 6-1.
SLU got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but then Cincinnati added a run in the sixth, two more in the eighth, and four in the ninth to take a 13-2 lead into the final half inning of the day.
The Billikens did score a pair of runs in that final frame, but it wasn’t nearly enough to come back from an 11-run deficit.
SLU is now 16-5 on the year and Cincinnati is 14-10.
The two teams will play the rubber game of their series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
