ST. LOUIS, MO — After spending last weekend on the road, and losing all three games of the games it played on the trip, the Saint Louis University baseball team is back at the Billiken Sports Complex this weekend for a three-game set against longtime foe, the University of Cincinnati.
The Billikens and Bearcats used to play often, when they were both members of the Great Midwest Conference. But now Saint Louis is in the Atlantic 10 and Cincinnati is in its first year in the Big 12.
The Bearcats (13-9) figure to have an interesting year, playing the likes of Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, and BYU, among others. But before they begin all that, the Bearcats will be in the Gateway City to take on Saint Louis.
SLU will begin its A-10 play next weekend with a home series against Rhode Island. But first, they’ll get to see their old friends from Cincinnati.
Players to Watch: SLU’s high-powered offense is led by junior right fielder Patrick Clohisy. A slugging lefty, who leads Saint Louis with a .479 batting average, five home runs and 28 RBIs.
Half of Clohisy’s hits so far this year have been for extra-bases. He’s 34-for-71 at the plate, with seven doubles, five triples (which is the most of any player in the nation), and the previously mentioned five HRs.
Leadoff man and starting center fielder Hayden Moore is also having a fine year so far for the Billikens. He’s batting .385, with five homers, 19 RBIs, and a team-best 11 stolen bases.
Other standouts in the SLU lineup include Tyler Fogarty (.373 ba, 4 HRs, 23 RBIs), Cole Smith (.384 ba, 1 HR, 27 RBIs), and freshman sensation Graham Mastros (.317 ba, 2 HRs, 10 RBIs).
Cincinnati’s lineup is led by Josh Hegemann, who’s batting .380, with six doubles and 10 RBIs, and Lauden Brooks (.355 ba, five doubles, three triples, 11 RBIs).
The Bearcats’ top power hitter is Josh Kross, who had 5 HRs and 29 RBIs. Teammate Tommy O’Connor has 4 HRs and 17 RBIs.
Ace starter Nathan Taylor leads Cincinnati’s pitching staff. He’ll likely start on Friday, with a 5-0 record, a 4.81 ERA, and 32 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Saturday’s starter will probably be Tommy Boba, who is 1-2, with a 7.04 ERA in five starts.
The Bearcats have tried a couple of different pitchers as their No. 3 starter. Seth Logue has made four starts and Bradley Coulter has made three.
SLU’s Friday and Saturday starters will probably be Jackson Holmes (4-1) and Jackson Yarberry (3-1), with Owen Chaffin (1-0) or Tommy Ray (1-0) possibly making the start on Sunday.
Up Next: Saint Louis will go on the road for a non-conference game against Kansas on Tuesday, before coming back home to begin A-10 play next weekend with a three-game set against Rhode Island.
