ST. LOUIS, MO — With a few weeks still to go until the start of the Atlantic 10 Conference season, the Saint Louis University baseball team will continue its non-conference slate with an interesting set of games this weekend.
The Billikens will welcome to town the Loyola-Marymount Lions, the defending West Coast Conference regular season champions from last year.
LMU is known for producing great pitching talent and that has continued this year, with the Lions boasting one of the nation’s best set of starting pitchers. Each of them is a Major League Baseball prospect, led by senior righthander Owen Hackman, who has a 0.52 ERA and three wins in three starts already this year.
Junior lefty Ryan Towers is 1-0, but has been almost as dominant. He has a 2.70 ERA, with 14 strikeouts and only one walk all season.
LMU’s third starter is sophomore Chaz McRoberts, a player who mostly pitched in relief his freshman year, but has been dynamite for the Lions so far this season.
That trio figures to be the first real tough test Saint Louis’ lineup has faced this year. The Billikens have been one of the most explosive offenses in the country through the first month of the season.
SLU has scored 159 runs in its first 12 games, a total that ranks third-most in the country, with a 13.3 runs/game average which is second-best in the NCAA.
The Billiken offense has been led by junior right fielder Patrick Clohisy, who leads the Atlantic 10 with a .511 batting average with 23 hits in 45 at-bats this season. Clohisy also leads the league with 20 RBIs to go along with three home runs.
Leadoff man Hayden Moore has been nearly as spectacular for SLU this year. The junior centerfielder has a .385 batting average, four home runs, 15 RBIs, and eight stolen bases.
Moore is tied with senior Drew Winters for the team lead four homers. Winters also has 15 RBIs.
Senior left fielder Tyler Fogarty is hitting .365, with three homers, 16 RBIs, and eight stolen bases.
Loyola-Marymount’s offense hasn’t been quite as prolific as Saint Louis’, but the Lions do have a couple of players that stand out.
Junior right fielder Sam Biller is hitting .317 and ranks among the nation’s leaders with seven home runs. He also leads the Lions with 14 RBIs.
LMU is also hoping to get sophomore catcher Khadim Diaw back in the lineup. He leads their club with a .381 batting average and has two HRs and six RBIs. He was injured in one of the Lions’ games last weekend.
The Billikens and Lions will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. First pitch on both days will be 12 p.m.
