BRONX, NY — The Saint Louis University baseball team won its fifth straight game, Friday afternoon, when it defeated host Fordham University, 6-1, in an Atlantic 10 Conference road game at Houlihan Park.
Every batter in the Saint Louis lineup had at least one hit, led by senior first baseman Cole Smith, who had a game-high three hits and a stolen base. Fellow seniors Drew Winters and Ben Gallaher both had two hits. Winters also scored two runs, while Gallaher scored a run and had an RBI.
Atlantic 10 leading hitter Patrick Clohisy continued his phenomenal season by bashing his Billiken-leading seventh home run of the season. That solo RBI also put the junior outfielder in the A-10 lead with 41 RBIs this season.
Pitchers Jackson Holmes and Ethan Bell combined to toss a gem of a game for Saint Louis. Holmes (7-1) went five innings and allowed just one run to get the win, while Bell threw a shutout in the other four innings to get his fifth save of the season.
The Billikens jumped on the Rams in the top of the second inning, when they got five consecutive hits and scored three runs off Fordham starter Declan Lavelle (5-4).
Chase Beattie drove in the first run on a one-out single, and was followed by an RBI hit by Gallaher. Easton Richter followed that with an RBI double to put SLU up 3-0.
Clohisy added a run in the top of the fifth, when he drilled an 0-1 pitch over the right field wall to make the score 4-0. Fordham got a run back in the bottom half of the inning.
Saint Louis added two more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 6-1, which proved to be more than enough to hold off Fordham for the day.
The Billikens are now 26-8 on the season and maintained their hold on first place in the A-10 with an 8-2 league mark. Fordham is 14-22 on the season and sits in sixth place in the conference standings with a 5-5 record.
The teams will play Game 2 of their series on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
