ST. LOUIS, MO — Caroline Kelly scored twice and four of her teammates scored their first goals as collegiate players, Sunday afternoon, as the Saint Louis University women’s soccer team delivered a dominant performance in an 8-0 win over visiting Kansas City at Hermann Stadium.
Saint Louis (3-1), which has now won three games in a row after losing its opener against No. 13-ranked BYU, controlled the action from the outset, outshooting the visitors from the western side of the state 22 to 1, with 15 of those Billiken shots being on goal.
SLU got a pair of first half goals, first from the senior Kelly, and then from redshirt sophomore Julia Simon. But then, the home team erupted for six goals in the second half to make the Sunday’s match was no contest.
“To get a shutout was really an objective and important for us,” head coach Katie Shields said. “I thought we did really well in the first half (to go up) two-zero. And then in the second half, I think our depth was able to kind of opened it up a bit. (We’re) happy to score goals, and in a lot of different ways, with a lot of different people.”
Seven different SLU players scored on Sunday, led by Kelly, whose two goals now give her a team-leading four on the season.
Simon, Katie Houck, Hannah Larson, Nina Preusser, Jordan Gary, and Samantha DeLuca were the other Billiken goal scorers. And with those eight goals, Saint Louis was able to match the fourth-highest goal total in program history. The eight total goals and six second-half goals are the second most in Hermann Stadium history.
And along with Simon, freshmen Pruesser, Gary, and DeLuca all came off the bench to score their first goals as Billikens.
“It’s so fun and you always remember your first goal and first assist,” Shields said. “And like I said, different players and different combinations. We’re still trying to figure out all the different combinations and places this group can help us because this is as deep of a team as we’ve ever had.”
Emily Gaebe and Clare Nicholas each had two assists, while freshman Liv Layton notched her first assist as a SLU player.
Saint Louis will look to keep its win streak going, when it returns to Hermann Stadium on Thursday, August 31, for a match against nationally-ranked Xavier University. The Musketeers were ranked No. 17 in last week’s United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll.
First pitch for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
