ST. LOUIS, MO — After traveling to different parts of the country for the first couple weeks of the season, the Saint Louis University baseball team will play its first set of games at home this weekend, when it welcomes Le Moyne University to the Billiken Sports Complex.
The Billikens and Dolphins will play three games at the BSC, beginning on Friday at 3 p.m. The teams will meet again, Saturday at 2 p.m., and then finally, Sunday at noon.
The three-game set is the beginning of an eight-game homestand for Saint Louis, which over the next couple of weeks will also play Western Illinois, Loyola Marymount, and Missouri State.
The Billikens are off to a blue-hot start to begin this season. Saint Louis is 8-0 for the first time since 1966 and will come into the weekend’s action as one of the top power hitting teams in the country.
SLU has hit 20 home runs in its first eight games, including a program-record seven in its most recent win, a 13-8 slugfest over SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday. Those 20 homers has the Billikens tied for seventh-most in the country of all NCAA Division I teams.
Scoring-wise, SLU has scored 117 runs and is averaging 14.6 runs per game in its eight games. Both those totals are second-most in the nation, behind only Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which has scored 121 runs and averages 15.1 runs/game.
Seven different Billiken players have at least two home runs already this year, led by senior 1B/DH Drew Winters, who has four HRs. Teammates Tyler Fogarty, Hayden Moore, and Austin Neuweg each have three.
Six SLU players have already reached double figures in runs batted in, led by Winters and senior outfielder Cole Smith, who both have 14.
On the mound, pitchers Jackson Holmes, Dawson Smith, Jack Weber, and Jackson Yarberry are all 2-0, while relievers Ethan Bell and Evan Gray both have saves.
Le Moyne comes to town with a 2-5 record, after beginning the year with games against Houston Christian and Radford.
Last year, the Dolphins went 34-22 at the Division II level and won the Northeast-10 Southwest Division championship.
This year will be Le Moyne’s first season playing at Division I. Sophomore catcher Brody Keneston was named Northeast Conference Player of the Week, afer batting .308, scoring two runs, driving in six runs in the Dolphins’ weekend series at Radford.
Keneston leads Le Moyne with nine RBIs so far this year. Teammate Nick Nevins, a fifth-year senior shortstop, leads the Dolphins with a .333 batting average, to go with a home run and five RBIs.
