ST. LOUIS, MO — For the second straight game, the Saint Louis University women’s basketball team delivered a masterful fourth quarter performance to turn a sloppy deficit into a surging win.
Last time, it was against Missouri. This time, it was against Missouri State and the final score was 79-67.
Saint Louis trailed 51-46 heading into the fourth quarter, but then the Billikens scored 33 points — more points than they had in the entire first half — to pull away from the Lady Bears.
Senior forward Peyton Kennedy scored 24 points to Saint Louis, including a putback layup with 5:52 to go that gave the Billikens their first lead of the fourth quarter at 57-55. Fellow senior Julia Martinez had 21 points, mostly from the free throw line, where she made 12 of 13 down the stretch to help SLU put the game away.
The Saint Louis defense was also a key factor in the fourth quarter, as it held Missouri State to 29 percent shooting (five-of-17) in the final 10 minutes. By contrast, the Billikens shot 60 percent (six-of-10) in the fourth quarter.
SLU is now 2-1 on the season and will go for its third straight win, when it heads to Hawaii this weekend to play Chaminade. The Billikens will also play Wake Forest and BYU next Monday and Tuesday in Hawaii, before returning home for a game at Chaifetz Arena, on November 26 against Illinois-Chicago.
