ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team got another multi-hit, multi-RBI game from hitting star Patrick Clohisy and a strong pitching effort from freshman Jackson Yarberry to secure its first Atlantic 10 Conference series win, Friday afternoon, when the Billikens defeated Rhode Island 8-1, in a game at the Billiken Sports Complex.
Clohisy, who had four hits and drove in two runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday, came back with three hits and three RBIs to lead the Saint Louis offense on Friday.
The junior outfielder and St. Louis native drove in the first run of the game on a hit in the bottom of the third inning. Then in the fourth inning, he drilled a double over the Rhode Island centerfielder’s head that drove in two runs to give the Billikens a 4-0 lead.
That proved to be more than enough for Yarberry, a true freshman from Lake St. Louis, who delivered his best performance of the season, by holding the Rams to just five hits and one run, while walking none and striking out six in a season-best six innings pitched.
Yarberry is now 4-2 on the season and he leads all Atlantic 10 freshman pitchers in wins.
Saint Louis (18-6, 2-0) put the game away when it scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Neuweg doubled home a run, then scored himself on a single by Ethan Sitzman.
Clohisy, whose batting average is now an A-10 best .484, walked, which allowed him to reach base for the fifth time in the game. Then, after Cole Smith walked to load the bases, Tyler Fogarty blasted a double down the left field line that scored Sitzman and Clohisy.
Sophomore Charlie Weber pitched the final three innings and didn’t allow a run to get his first save of the season.
The Billikens will go for the series sweep on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
