ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team fell behind early, but battled back in a big way on Tuesday, when it came from behind to defeat Western Illinois, 14-4, in an NCAA college baseball game at the Billiken Sports Complex.
The visiting Leathernecks took a 3-0 lead after two innings, then went ahead 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, before Saint Louis scored 11 unanswered runs to earn its 11th win of the season and fourth in four tries against Western Illinois.
SLU rightfielder Patrick Clohisy, the current Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, had another huge day for the Billikens, as he went three-for-four at the plate, with all three hits being extra-base hits, including a double, triple, and his third home run of the season. Clohisy also had four RBIs, a stolen base, and scored four runs.
The home run, a three-run shot over the right field wall, gave Saint Louis its first lead, at 6-4, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Once it had the lead, SLU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, which included a two-run homer by junior centerfielder Hayden Moore, who is now tied with Drew Winters for the team lead with four dingers this season.
The Billikens added another run in the sixth inning, before closing the game out with its final run in the seventh. Once Saint Louis was ahead by 10 runs on what was becoming an increasingly blistery day, the game was called after seven innings.
It was the ninth time this year, SLU had scored 10 runs or more in a single game.
Other hitters who stood out, included Graham Mastros, who had three hits and scored two runs; Tyler Fogarty, who had two hits and scored two runs; and sophomore Easton Richter, who was making his first start of the season and was on base four times (two hits and two walks), drove in two runs, stole a base, and scored a run.
Dawson Smith started the game on the mound, but it was reliever Jackson Yarberry (3-0), who earned the win, after coming in and pitching three strong innings, where he faced 11 batters and only allowed two hits and only allowed one run.
Fellow relievers Evan Gray and Josh Cunningham both pitched scoreless innings to keep Western Illinois at four runs.
The Billikens (11-1) will continue their homestand with a three-game set this weekend against Loyola-Marymount (7-5). The teams will play single games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday’s game will begin at 2 p.m., with Sunday’s start set for 12 p.m.
