BLOOMINGTON, IN — The Saint Louis University men’s soccer team pulled off a dramatic upset in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday.
The Billikens shocked No. 6 overall seed Indiana, 1-0, in a second round match that ended the Hoosiers’ season and sent Saint Louis to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
SLU will now face No. 11 seed Bryant University in a Round of 16 match, next Sunday, November 30, with the winner advancing to the Elite Eight.
Billiken junior Tanner Anderson scored the game’s only goal, in the 17th minute, when he won a race to an open ball, following a long pass by SLU goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel that was later tipped ahead by SLU freshman Theo Franca.
Anderson got to the ball and didn’t hesitate. He fired a shot past Indiana keeper Holden Brown to put Saint Louis on the board.
From that point on, the Billikens let their defense take over. And for the final 73 minutes of the game, SLU smothered Indiana’s offense.
The Hoosiers took 16 shots, but maybe of them were wild attempts from far away distances because the Billikens wouldn’t let them get the ball near their net.
Abonnel made three saves to preserve the shutout. All three were before SLU scored its goal, meaning the Billikens didn’t allow Indiana — the nation’s No. 2-ranked scoring offense — any scoring chances once they had the lead.
Saint Louis advances to the third round (Round of 16) for the second time under eighth-year head coach Kevin Kalish. The last time the Billikens reached the third round was during the 2021 season, when they advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
