ST. LOUIS, MO — The second-seeded Saint Louis University men’s soccer team was upset in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, Friday night. Saint Louis and its opponent, Massachusetts, had to go to overtime penalty kicks to settle the match, which UMass won 4-3.
The Minutemen will now advance to the A-10 Tourney semifinals, while the Billikens will have to wait until Monday, November 13, to find out if their season will continue with a berth in the NCAA National Championship Tournament.
After a scoreless first half, the Minutemen struck first in the 48th minute when A-10 leading scorer Alec Hughes scored to make it 1-0 UMass. It was Hughes’ 15th goal of the season.
But SLU responded with a pair of goals by sophomore forward Mads Stistrup Petersen. He scored his first goal of the game in the 56th minute off of assists by Seth Anderson and Carlos Leatherman.
Stistrup Petersen scored his third goal of the season, to make it 2-1 SLU on another strike in the 66th minute. Christian Buendia and Anderson once again set up the play and were credited with assists.
In the 75th minute, it was Nick Zielonka’s turn to equalize as he found the back of the net to make it 2-2.
That remained the score through two 10-minute overtime periods to set up the PK shootout to decide the match.
The first five rounds ended in a 3-3 tie, bringing the teams to sudden-death rounds. UMass’ Andrew Ortiz made his chance, then UMass keeper Matt Zambetti stopped the ensuing SLU chance to send the Minutemen into the A-10 semifinals.
The Billikens have an 8-4-5 record, which depending on what else happens in conference tournaments around the country, might be good enough to earn the club a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
