COOKEVILLE, TN — Lindenwood quarterback Cade Brister threw a season-high five touchdown passes and led the Lions on a potentially game-winning drive in the final minute, but it wasn’t enough, as the home team Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles held on and defeated Lindenwood, 35-34, in another thrilling Ohio Valley Conference game at Tucker Stadium.
Brister, who leads the OVC in nearly every passing category, added to his numbers with 24 completions for 303 yards and the five touchdowns, while also rushing the ball 27 times for 49 yards to lead the Lions.
Unfortunately, the Tennessee Tech defense also had a big day, as it sacked Brister 10 times and held the Lindenwood offense to just 106 rushing yards. The Golden Eagles, on the other hand, rushed for 303 yards and almost eight yards per carry, as it controlled the action for most of the second half on its way to its second straight win.
The loss ended a four-game winning streak for Lindenwood.
The key sequence in the game came after Lindenwood scored a touchdown with 14 seconds left, that with the extra-point could’ve tied the game and forced overtime. But instead, the Lions elected to go for a two-point conversion, which could have won the game if it were successful.
Unfortunately, it was not, as the Tennessee Tech defense forced Brister to throw a pass to a receiver that was covered and the ball fell harmlessly to the ground. That allowed the Golden Eagles to preserve their lead and set off a huge celebration among the announced crowd of 7,100, who were on hand for Tennessee Tech’s Homecoming Day.
The loss dropped Lindenwood’s record to 6-3 and 1-3 in OVC play. Tennessee Tech is now 3-6 and 2-3 in conference play.
The Lions will conclude their season, next Saturday, November 12, when they’ll host former Great Lakes Valley Conference foe, McKendree University, at Hunter Stadium. That contest is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m., and will be streamed live on ESPN-Plus.
