CLAYTON, MO — The No. 3-ranked Washington University women’s soccer team scored three first-half goals and another just after the beginning of the second half to cruise to a 4-0 win over No. 22 Brandeis, Saturday afternoon at Francis Olympic Field.
Junior midfielder Gaelen Clayton scored two of those goals, her team-best fifth and sixth scores of the season, to lead WashU to its 10th straight win to begin the 2023 season. Both of Clayton’s goals came in the first half.
The first tally came at the 13:19 mark, when Clayton took a pass on a corner kick from Anna Viscovich and fired a high shot past the Brandeis goalkeeper and into the top of the net.
She struck again at the 16:56 mark, after receiving a short pass from Meryl McKenna and knocking the ball into the right corner of the net.
WashU continued to attack, netting the third goal of the game at the 35:55 mark. First-year Madison Foley scored her second goal of the season off a pass from Sophie Viscovich. Foley took a short dribble and fired the ball into the opposite corner for a 3-0 Bears lead.
The Bears scored their final goal of the game in the 41st minute as Sophie Viscovich took a short pass from Ella Koleno and sent a long ball into the net.
WashU registered nine shots with six on goal and earned four corner kicks.
In the net, Sidney Conner made three saves to keep Brandeis off the board for her eighth shutout of the season. The Bears remain the lone team across all divisions and genders to not allow a goal in any game this season.
WashU returns to action tomorrow with a road contest against crosstown rival Fontbonne. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
