SPRINGFIELD, IL — Gateway Grizzlies rookie Teague Conrad led his team to a key victory by pitching the first complete-game shutout of his professional career and earning a 5-0 win over the Lake Erie Crushers, Tuesday night at historic Robin Roberts Stadium.
Conrad (6-3), who joined the Grizzlies early in the season, after finishing his college career at SIU-Edwardsville, gave up just three hits and one walk, while striking out four. It was the rookie righthander’s second straight appearance without giving up any runs and his first win since the All-Star break last month.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder from Schaumburg, Ill., no-hit Lake Erie for the first six-plus innings, before finally surrendering a hit in the top of the seventh. Overall, Conrad allowed just two singles and a double, but never faced any real scoring threat, as he dominated the Lake Erie lineup from start to finish.
On the other side, Gateway’s lineup had four players get two hits and five players that drove in a run.
Peter Zimmermann drove in the first run with an RBI groundball in the bottom of the first. D.J. Stewart, Jose Alvarez, and Gabe Holt each drove in runs with scoring basehits in the fourth. And Kevin Krause blasted a solo home run — his eighth of the season and third straight game with a homer — to close out the scoring in the fifth.
The win raised Gateway’s season record to 47-31, six games behind the Washington Wild Things for first place in the Frontier League West Division. The Grizzlies also moved back to three games ahead of Lake Erie for the home-field advantage spot in the West Division Wild Card Game.
If the playoffs began today, Gateway would host Lake Erie in a single-elimination game at Grizzlies Ballpark on September 3, for the right to play Washington in the West Division Championship Series the following weekend.
Game 2 of the Gateway/Lake Erie series will move back to Grizzlies Ballpark on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
GATEWAY TRANSACTIONS
The Grizzlies also made a number of roster transactions before yesterday’s game.
The club placed IF Tate Wargo on the 14-day injured list, placed RHP Tyler Cornett and OF Tyler Shelnut on the 7-day injured list. Gateway also activated C Jose Alvarez and RHP Alvery De Los Santos from the special inactive list, and received and signed OF Victor Castillo from New England to complete an earlier trade.
The Grizzlies also signed RHP Keagan Collett and RHP Justin Goosen-Brown, and released RHP Aaron Dona.
