CLAYTON, MO — Washington University’s Hayden Doyle hit a sprawling jumper with five seconds left in overtime to lift the No. 22-ranked Bears to a thrilling 87-86 upset win over No. 2-ranked Case Western Reserve, in a UAA league game, Sunday afternoon at the WashU Field House.
Doyle, a junior guard from Brookfield, Ill., finished the day with 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. But his biggest play of the day was the off-balance jumper he made seconds after Case Western’s Sam Trunley made a basket to give the visiting Spartans the lead with 12 seconds left on the clock.
After that basket, the Bears quickly inbounded the ball and rushed down court to set up a final play. Doyle looked for an opponent teammate, then made a move to try to shift the defense.
That move worked, as he found an opening and went up for a shot that swished home to give WashU the lead.
Case Western called timeout to try to set up its final play, which turned out to be a three-pointer at the buzzer that clanked off the rim and gave the Bears the victory.
The Spartans also had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a three-pointer by Trunley missed as time expired to send the game to overtime.
In that sequence, WashU also had a chance to win in regulation. The Bears were behind 75-74, when sophomore center Calvin Kapral was fouled with 53 seconds left.
The 6-foot-8 big man missed the first, but made the second free throw to tie the score at 75. Both teams missed shots in the final 30 seconds, which sent the game to overtime.
In overtime, the teams traded the lead four times before Case Western’s Anthony Mazzeo made a layup to give the Spartans an 84-82 lead with 39 seconds to go. WashU’s Kyle Beedon banged home a three-pointer to give the Bears the lead back with 28 seconds left.
That set up Trunley’s basket with 12 seconds, which set up Doyle’s game-winner with 5 seconds left.
It was a dramatic day for the two UAA powerhouses.
Mazzeo finished with a game-high 27 points for the Spartans, while Kapral led the Bears with 23 points. Jabari Chiphe came off the bench for WashU to add 13 points.
The win lifted WashU’s season record to 14-4. Case Western is 15-3, and the clubs are tied for second place in the UAA standings with 4-3 league marks.
They’ll meet again next Sunday in Cleveland at Case Western’s Horsburgh Gymnasium. Tip off for that matchup is set for 11 a.m.
