CINCINNATI, OH — Saint Louis University All-American Emily Gaebe put on an all-everything performance Thursday night to lead the No. 23 Billikens to a 3-2 road win over No. 16 Xavier at that school’s Corcoran Stadium.
Gaebe, who assisted on SLU’s first two goals, made the play of the night, when she broke free in the 82nd minute and drilled a shot past Xavier goalkeeper Maria Galley to score her sixth goal of the season and give the Billikens a 3-2 lead.
SLU was able to hold on for the final eight minutes, behind the brilliant net play of goalkeeper Emily Puricelli, who made 10 saves in the match, to secure a dramatic win in what is sure to be one of the Billikens’ most difficult road games of the year.

Saint Louis has won two straight games and is now 4-1-3 on the season. Xavier had been unbeaten, but suffered its first loss, and is now 7-1-1 on the year.
The Musketeers scored first, in the opening minute of the game to take a 1-0 lead. But SLU responded with a pair of first-half goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.
Gaebe made a play in the 15th minute that set up teammate Audrey Smith for her second goal of the season, which tied the game at 1. Then in the 31st minute, Gaebe fought off two defenders to make a pass to Hannah Sawyer, which she turned into a goal — also her second of the season — that gave SLU its 2-1 lead.
Xavier tied the game in the 68th minute, but that only set the stage for Gaebe’s dramatic game-winning play in the 82nd minute. The junior from Union, Mo., not only leads the Billikens with six goals and 15 points this season, she is also closing in on several all-time team records, including most goals and points.

Gaebe has 38 career goals and only needs three more to tie all-time leader Jamie Perry at 41. Gaebe has 97 career points, which is third behind Hannah Friedrich (105) and Perry (104).
The Billikens will enjoy a well-deserved weekend off before returning to action next Thursday, when they’ll begin Atlantic 10 Conference play with a road match against UMass. SLU’s next home game will be September 22 against George Washington.
