PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Saint Louis University men’s basketball team will finish off a two-game road trip on Saturday, when it takes on Saint Joseph’s in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Hagan Arena.
Saint Louis is coming off one of its most impressive wins of the season, a 102-84 win over La Salle on Wednesday, which snapped a six-game losing streak for the Billikens, dating back into January.
SLU shot 56.3 percent (36-of-64) in the game and scored 51 points in both halves, as it cruised to a much-needed victory over the Explorers. The Billikens will face a much stiffer test on Saturday, though as they take on 15-8 Saint Joe’s, which despite losing on Tuesday to first place Dayton, had won five of its previous six.
The Hawks are one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country. They make 10.6 per game, which leads the A-10 and ranks sixth nationally.
Saint Joe’s has real hopes of making the NCAA Tournament this season, whether it does it by winning the A-10 Tournament or by earning an at-large bid. But if the Hawks are going to pull that off, they can’t afford another loss to the Billikens.
SLU defeated Saint Joe’s, in a thrilling contest, when the teams met at Chaifetz Arena back on January 10. The Hawks led by as many as 20 points at one point, but the Billikens rallied and won 88-85.
A win for Saint Joe’s would help the Hawks keep pace like they need to for possibly earning a spot in the postseason, while a victory for SLU would pull the Billikens out of last place in the A-10 standings, which is where they currently sit — tied with La Salle.
Players to Watch: SLU junior Sincere Parker looked as good as he’s had since before suffering a broken foot earlier this season.
The 6-foot-3 sharpshooter scored a career-high 33 points in the Billikens’ win over La Salle on Wednesday. He made 10-of-14 shots, including four three-pointers and all nine free throws he attempted.
Young players Larry Hughes II and Kellen Thames also played well against La Salle. Hughes scored 13 points and Thames added 12, as SLU relied mostly on its young guys.
Veteran leaders Terrence Hargrove and Gibson Jimerson will surely be counted on more against Saint Joe’s.
For the Hawks, Erik Reynolds II leads them in scoring at 17.4 ppg. This season, Reynolds has made 75 three-pointers, which leads the A-10 and ranks 11th nationally.
Up Next: SLU will get several days off next week, before returning to the court on Friday, for a matchup against VCU. That matchup at Chaifetz Arena is slated for a 6 p.m. start and will be televised nationally on ESPN2, as part of its ESPN/A-10 Friday Night Hoops Showcase.
