NASHVILLE, TN — The No. 15-ranked Saint Louis University men’s soccer team will take its first road trip of the 2023 season when it heads down south to take on Lipscomb.
Saint Louis is coming off a thrilling 2-1 win last Thursday, at home against Butler, while Lipscomb is coming off a season-opening loss to Florida Atlantic.
The Billikens are ranked in all three national polls – No. 20 at College Soccer News, No. 20 at Top Drawer Soccer, and No. 24 in United Soccer Coaches. The updated United Soccer Coaches poll will be released later this afternoon.
Lipscomb went 14-3-2 last season, setting a school-record for wins, and captured the Atlantic Sun Conference title. However, the Bison were upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by upstart Western Michigan.
The Billikens and Bison have played two times previously, with both clubs having won once. Lipscomb won 2-1 when the teams met last year in St. Louis.
Players to Watch: SLU got a dynamite season-opening performance by sophomore CJ Coppola. The speedy 6-2 forward scored two goals, including the game-winner with just over two minutes left to lead the Billikens to the win.
New goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel made five saves – including several from point-blank range – to help secure the win for SLU.
Lipscomb sophomore Malachi Jones, an All-Atlantic Sun Conference and freshman All-American last year, scored twice in his team’s opener. Last year, Jones had seven goals and three assists.
Teammates Luca Naumann and Tyrese Spicer each had a goal and an assist in the opener as well.
Up Next: Saint Louis will be back in town for its next matchup — the annual Bronze Boot game against longtime rival SIU-Edwardsville — which will be played at CITYPARK, as part of a doubleheader featuring the two school’s women’s teams as well.
The women’s game is slated to begin at 5 p.m., with the men’s contest set to follow at 7:30 p.m.
