DAYTON, OH — Fresh off one of its most fun wins of the season, an 88-85 comeback win over Saint Joseph’s, the Saint Louis University men’s basketball team will head into what may be its single toughest game of the season on Tuesday, when it heads to Dayton to play the No. 21-ranked Flyers.
Dayton was the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic 10 Conference this season and has looked every bit like the best team in the league so far, especially in December and January, when the team has won 10 games in a row.
Saint Louis earned its first A-10 win with the victory over Saint Joseph’s and could put itself in position for a nice run if it could keep its solid play going against the Flyers, who are 3-0 in league play and tied for first place with Richmond and Rhode Island.
Tuesday’s matchup will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
Players to Watch: The Billikens are led by redshirt junior Gibson Jimerson, who ranks seventh in the A-10 in scoring at 17.2 points per game. In SLU’s win over Saint Joe’s, Jimerson tied a career high with seven three-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points.
6-9 big man Bradley Ezewiro is five games into his Billiken career and is averaging 17.2 points and 7.6 rebounds. He has scored in double figures in all five of his games this year. Ezewiro became eligible on Dec. 15 with the rest of the NCAA’s two-time transfers.
East St. Louis native Terrance Hargrove, Jr. is averaging 13.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game this season, and in his last six games is shooting 59 percent (10-of-17) from three-point land.
Daron Holmes II leads the A-10 in scoring with 18.7 ppg and is Dayton’s top rebounder at 7.3 rpg. He is the Flyers’ career record holder for blocked shots with 178.
Koby Brea is third in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage (.483, 43-89). As a team, the Flyers are fifth in the country in 3-point shooting percentage (.403) and are 28th in the NCAA in 3-pointers made per game (9.6).
Nate Santos (11.9 ppg) and Kobe Elvis (10.3 ppg) also score in double figures for the Flyers.
Anthony Grant is in his seventh season coaching at his alma mater. He is 137-66 at Dayton and 330-175 in 16 seasons overall.
Up Next: SLU will play another nationally televised game on Friday, when it travels even further east to play VCU. That game will be ESPN2’s “A-10 Game of the Week” and will tip off at 6 p.m.
SLU’s next home game will come next Wednesday, January 24, when the Billikens will host Davidson.
