ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University men’s basketball team is hoping moving into the month of February and putting January behind them will be the remedy it needs to end its current five-game losing streak.
In fact, Saint Louis, which 8-13 on the season and 1-7 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, won just one game in January and has lost eight of its last nine since winning two straight back in mid-December.
The current five-game losing streak is the longest of head coach Travis Ford’s tenure at SLU. Injuries have been a key factor in that, but now that the team is close to full strength, the Billikens are hoping to put an end to its slide.
Fordham comes to town with a 9-12 overall record, 3-5 in the A-10, and is coming off an 83-69 loss to Richmond on Wednesday. The Rams are tied for 10th place in the A-10 standings, while SLU is in last with just the one league win.
SLU and Fordham have met 20 times previously. The Billikens hold a 15-4 all-time edge.
Players to Watch: Gibson Jimerson continues to be SLU’s leading scorer. He averages 15.3 points per game and is nearing Erwin Claggett’s school record for most three-pointers made. Jimerson has 281, Claggett set the record at 295.
Bradley Ezewiro is second on the Billikens with 13.1 ppg and he leads the team with a 6.5 rebounds per game average. The junior big man has scored in double figures in eight of the 10 games he’s played in this season.
Larry Hughes II scored a career-high 14 points in SLU’s last home game (against UMass last Saturday), while teammate Cian Medley notched a career-high 11 points in SLU’s last outing against Loyola-Chicago. Medley leads the Billikens with 66 assists this season.
Senior guard Japhet Medor leads the Rams in scoring (11.7) and is second in assists (2.7/game) while sophomore guard Will Richardson is second in scoring, averaging 10.7 ppg.
Over the past ten games, sophomore guard Will Richardson is averaging 12.4 ppg and 3.0 apg (30 assists/12 turnovers) while senior guard Kyle Rose is averaging 11.3 ppg and 6.5 rpg.
Over the past eight games, sophomore forward Elijah Gray is averaging 14.3 ppg and 5.8 rpg.
Up Next: Saint Louis will be on the road in Philadelphia for its next two games. First, the Billikens will play at La Salle on Wednesday, before taking on Saint Joseph’s, next Saturday.
SLU’s next home game will be on Friday, February 16, when the Billikens host VCU at Chaifetz Arena.
