ST. LOUIS, MO — The Saint Louis University baseball team will wrap up what’s been a fun and enjoyable eight-game homestand on Tuesday, when they’ll host longtime in-state rival Missouri State in a mid-week nonconference game at the Billiken Sports Complex.
Saint Louis is coming off a three-game sweep over the weekend against Loyola-Marymount, which has seen the Billikens’ current winning streak reach six games.
Missouri State has won four in a row, including a weekend sweep of its own against Central Arkansas. In that series, the Bears won three tight ballgames, each requiring late runs to pull out the victory.
In the month of March, Missouri State has won five of the six games it has played.
Players to Watch: For Saint Louis, the story of the season has been its offense. The Billikens have blasted the ball in every game this season.
SLU has scored 187 runs, and average of 12.5 runs per game. That total run total leads the Atlantic 10 Conference and ranks fourth-best in the entire NCAA. The runs per game total is second-best in the country.
Saint Louis has hit 23 home runs, which ranks 20th in the NCAA, and the team’s on-base percentage of .478 is No. 2 in the country.
Leading the way for the Billikens is junior outfielder Patrick Clohisy, who will come into Tuesday’s action with a .483 batting average, which leads the team an the entire Atlantic 10.
Clohisy also leads or is tied for the team lead with 28 hits, four home runs, and 26 RBIs. He also has 28 runs scored, which is second on the team to leadoff man Hayden Moore, who leads the nation with 29 runs scored.
Moore is hitting .408, with 10 stolen bases, and is also tied for the team lead with four home runs. Teammates Ethan Sitzman (.389, 4 HR, 12 RBI), Tyler Fogarty (.385, 4 HR, 19 RBI), and Cole Smith (.368, 1 HR, 23 RBI) have all taken turns leading the Billiken offense.
Senior righthander Dawson Smith (2-0) will likely make the start on the mound.
Missouri State is led by sophomore right fielder Zack Stewart, who will come into Tuesday with a .385 batting average, seven home runs, and 13 RBIs. Junior center fielder Jahlani has three home runs and a team-best 15 RBIs.
Righthanded hurler and St. Louis native Eric Loomis (1-1) will start for the Bears.
Up Next: The Billikens will be on the road for their next four games. They’ll play a three-game set against Southeast Louisiana this weekend, then travel to New Orleans to play at Tulane on Monday.
SLU’s next set of home games will come March 22-24, when the Billikens will host a weekend series against Cincinnati at the Billiken Sports Complex.
