After earning a spot in the national preseason Top 25 but then suffering two staggering defeats to begin the 2021 fall season, the Lindenwood University football will be looking to get things back on track Saturday night, when it hosts former conference rival, Kentucky Wesleyan College at Hunter Stadium.
The Lions are 0-2 on the year after getting blown out by Angelo State and South Dakota State in Weeks 1 and 2, but figure to come out roaring in their Week 3 matchup against KWC. The 1-1 Panthers picked up their first win of the season last week, in a 26-25 come-from-behind thriller over local rival Kentucky State.
Saturday’s matchup will be the first ever between Lindenwood and KWC.
Players to Watch: The Lions are led by quarterback Cade Brister, who has four touchdown passes in the LU’s first two games, including the team’s only score last week in South Dakota. A big key for Lindenwood this week will be how well its young offensive line plays. The crew has struggled in its first two games together this season, giving up eight sacks in the season opener and seven more last week.
Defensively, middle linebacker Drew Seers has been the one shining spot. He already has 27 tackles in Lindenwood’s first two games.
For Kentucky Wesleyan, quarterback JaKwon Roberts will be making his first start. He came in in relief over starter Christian Arrambide, who threw three touchdown passes but left the game with an injury last week. Arrambide will be out this week as well, and that means the Panthers will rely on Roberts, who gained his club’s confidence after leading them on the game-winning drive last week.
KWC has a pair of dynamite receivers in juniors David Florence and Brennen McGuire. Both players had over 100 yards last week and each also scored a touchdown.
Up Next: Lindenwood will be on the road for the next two weeks following Saturday’s game. Next week, the Lions will be in Ohio to face Findlay University, and in two weeks, they’ll be on the road again for their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener against Truman State.
LU’s next home game will come in three weeks, on Saturday, October 9, when it will host Quincy at Hunter Stadium. Kentucky Wesleyan is playing its second straight road game this week, but will be back home in Owensboro, Ky., next week, when they’ll host William Jewell.
