The black-and-gold hot Lindenwood University football team will take its show on the road, Saturday afternoon, as it travels across the state to take on winless William Jewell, and looks to extend its six-game winning streak to seven.
The Lions are coming off another dynamic victory last week, when they scored in five different ways in all three phases of the game to knock off upstart Southwest Baptist, 48-24.
Lindenwood, which has won 11 straight league contests since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2019, is looking to claim its second league title in three seasons. The Lions won the championship in 2019, but didn’t play in 2020 due to the covid pandemic.
With just three games left and wins over several of the teams trailing them in the standings, Lindenwood is already eyeing winning the championship again and earning a spot in the NCAA Division II playoffs, just as it did in 2019.
But first, the Lions have to take care of business against William Jewell, which has had an altogether unfortunate season due to injuries and inconsistent play. A win on Saturday for the Cardinals could be just the boost that program needs to regain its historical tradition of being one of the best small college football programs in the Midwest.
Players to Watch: The player to watch will be Lindenwood freshman quarterback Cole Dugger, who made his first collegiate start last week, replacing Player of the Year candidate Cade Brister, who suffered a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago in Lindenwood’s win at Indianapolis.
In that start, Dugger threw two touchdown passes and ran for another, as Lindenwood scored 35 points in the second quarter on its way to a huge win over a Southwest Baptist club that had won three of its last four previous games.
Lindenwood also got key contributions from running backs Nash Sutherlin and Robert Giaimo, who combined for 98 rushing yards and a touchdown, and pass catchers Payton Rose and Clint Sigg, who combined for 10 catches, 111 yards, and a touchdown.
The two most exciting plays of the day though, came from return man Spencer Redd and defensive back Jordan Perry, who both had return touchdowns in that huge second quarter.
Redd, who would later earn the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week award, ran back a punt 51 yards for a score. Then on Southwest Baptist’s next possession, Perry intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a score that helped Lindenwood turn an early 11-point deficit to a three-touchdown lead by halftime.
William Jewell is led on offense by senior receiver Jalik Jaggwe, who has 42 receptions, 476 yards, and four touchdowns this season. On defense, senior outside linebacker Kian Betancourt (10 tackles for loss and three quarterback sacks) leads a unit that has 12 total sacks on the season.
Up Next: Lindenwood will be on the road again next week, when it will head south, down to Rolla, to take on Missouri S&T. William Jewell will also be on the road next week. The Cardinals will be headed to Indiana to take on Indianapolis.
