The Lindenwood University football team will take its final road trip of the 2022 regular season this weekend, when it travels down to Cookeville, Tenn., for its first ever matchup against Tennessee Tech.

Lindenwood is 3-1 on the road and averaging 34.0 points in those games this season. The Lions, who were listed in the “those receiving votes” category in this week’s FCS Top 25 national poll, will be heading down south on a four-game winning streak, after knocking off William Jewell 64-23 last week.

Tennessee Tech will be hosting its Homecoming Game and is also coming off a win. The Golden Eagles defeated Eastern Illinois, 20-17, last week. That victory put an end to what had been a five-game losing streak for Tennessee Tech.

Players to Watch: Lindenwood quarterback Cade Brister might be just a couple of games away from lining up the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year award. The senior from O’Fallon, Mo., leads the OVC in every major passing category, including completions (184), yards (2,493), touchdowns (19), and passer efficiency (151.8).

And he also is ninth in the conference in rushing (422 yards) and third in rushing touchdowns (eight). Those numbers make Brister the OVC leader in total offense and are a big reason why he is the leading candidate to win the OVC Player of the Year award.

The Lions also have the league’s top receiving duo in Payton Rose and Kobe Smith. Rose, Lindenwood’s all-time career leader in receptions, yards, and receiving touchdowns, leads the OVC in yards (916), yards per catch (19.1), and touchdowns (seven).

Smith is tied with Rose for the league lead in receiving touchdowns (also seven) and has 590 receiving yards this year. Combined, Rose & Smith have 1,506 yards and 14 touchdowns. That puts them ahead of Southeast Missouri’s Johnny King and Ryan Flournoy, who have 1,414 yards and 13 touchdowns.

On defense, Lindenwood has battled injuries all year. But several players have emerged as top talents and leaders of the squad.

Linebackers David Whittemore and Tyrone Griffin lead the team with 50 tackles and 43 tackles, respectively, while edge rusher Sterlin Williams leads the Lions with 4.5 quarterback sacks.

In the defensive backfield, cornerback Darion Bolden leads Lindenwood with two interceptions and 12 pass break-ups, while safeties Lloyd Lockett and Mann McGruder have combined for 79 tackles, four pass break-ups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries.

Tennessee Tech is led by its quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall. For the season, the senior is fourth in the OVC in total offense, with 1,705 passing yards, 332 rushing yards, and 16 touchdown passes.

The Golden Eagles also have a standout running back in senior David Gist. He ranks eighth in the conference in rushing with 457 yards and three touchdowns this season.

On defense, senior linebacker Seth Carlisle is fourth in the OVC in total tackles with 71, and ranks second overall with 39 solo stops.

Up Next: Lindenwood will close out its 2022 regular season at home next week, with a matchup against crosstown rival, McKendree University. That contest will be played on Saturday, November 12, and will kick off at Hunter Stadium at 1 p.m.

Tennessee Tech has two games left after today. The Golden Eagles will play North Alabama, in a road game next week. Then finish out the season with a home game against North Carolina Central on November 19.
