ST. CHARLES, MO — The Lindenwood University football team will be back on the field and back at Hunter Stadium, Saturday afternoon, when it takes on former Great Lakes Valley Conference foe, William Jewell, in a matchup set to kickoff at 1 p.m.
The Lions are riding a three-game winning streak, after picking up road victories at Central Arkansas and Eastern Illinois, and an impressive Homecoming Day win last week against Murray State.
Lindenwood is 5-2 on the season and with a win on Saturday can clinch its third straight winning season under head coach Jed Stugart. The Lions are 31-22 in Stugart’s six seasons at the helm, with this season being the program’s first as NCAA Division I FCS members.
William Jewell is a Division II team that will come into Saturday’s contest with a 1-7 record. This will be the 18th meeting between the Lions and Cardinals, with Lindenwood owning a 12-5 all-time mark, which includes six straight wins over Jewell.
Last year, Lindenwood defeated William Jewell, 53-10, in a road game at Jewell’s Greene Stadium.
Players to Watch: Most weeks, it’s the Lindenwood offense that leads the way. But last week, it was the defense that carried and sparked the Lions to a 33-18 victory over Murray State.
Cornerback Darion Bolden was the big star of the day, as he had two interceptions, one which led to a 99-yard touchdown that helped carry Lindenwood to its victory. Secondary mate and starting free safety Mann McGruder also had a big day. He finished with a game-high 14 tackles, as the Lions found a way to shut down Murray State’s powerful run game in the second half.
Bolden’s performance earned him Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
On offense, quarterback Cade Brister had another fantastic day. The senior from O’Fallon, Mo., threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns, with two of those scores going to Kobe Smith, and the other to Payton Rose, who finished the day with 111 yards to become Lindenwood’s all-time leading receiver.
“This was another team win of guys picking each other up,” Stugart said. “Although we don’t like giving up explosive plays, our defense is finding out ways to step up and make plays when we need them. Debo (Darion Bolden) made the play of the day with his 99-yard pick-six. Offensively, even with the slow start, we moved the ball well, scored in the red zone, and ran key minutes off the clock to secure the win. Our special teams unit had a huge day as well, so it was an all-around team effort again today.”
William Jewell’s top offensive player this season has been junior wide receiver Deldrionn Amos, a speedster from Magnolia, Miss., who ranks in the top 5 in the GLVC in all receiving categories, including catches (37), yards (470), and touchdowns (five).
Defensively, middle linebacker Adam Callahan leads the Cardinals with 71 tackles, while edge rusher Carson Anderson leads the team with 2.5 quarterback sacks.
Up Next: Lindenwood will play its final road game of the year next week, when it travels to Cookeville, Tenn., for an OVC matchup against Tennessee Tech. The Lions’ final home game will be in two weeks, when they’ll host another former GLVC opponent, in cross-town rival McKendree University on November 12.
