COLUMBIA, MO — The University of Missouri men’s basketball team will wrap up its three-game homestand to begin the new season, Monday evening, when it hosts Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in a non-conference game at Mizzou Arena.
The Tigers (1-1) are coming off a disappointing loss to Memphis last Friday. Missouri led by as many as 14 points midway through the first half, but went completely cold from the field the rest of the way and eventually lost 70-55.
Like Mizzou, SIUE split its first two games, but did it in reverse. The Cougars (1-1) lost their opener on the road at Dayton last Monday, but won their home opener over North Park this past Thursday.
The two teams will be meeting for the fourth time — all previous contests at Mizzou Arena — with Missouri having won the first three, including a 105-80 contest last year.
Players to Watch: Five Tiger players are scoring in double figures – Sean East II (17.5), Nick Honor (13.0), Noah Carter (12.5), Tamar Bates (12.0) and Caleb Grill (10.5). Grill is leading Mizzou in rebounding, with 17 boards in the first two games. Jesus Carralero-Martin is averaging a team-best 4.0 assists per game.
East, a grad student, has begun his final college season strong. He led the Tigers in scoring in both of the first two games of the season and is shooting 75.0 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from 3-point range.
The 6-foot-3 point guard from Louisville, Ky., is the first Tiger to lead the team in scoring in both of the first two games of the season since Mark Smith five years ago (2018-19). If he were to do that again in tonight’s game, he’d be the first Tiger to do so since DeMarre Carroll did so in 2007-08.
Shamar Wright scored 29 points in Thursday’s win after missing the opener. Overall, three more Cougars score in double figures, led by 11.5 ppg from Damarco Minor, who also leads SIUE with 10.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Up Next: Missouri will make its first road trip for its next game, when it travels up north to take on Big 10 Conference foe, Minnesota. The Golden Gophers are 2-0, with wins over Bethune-Cookman and Texas-San Antonio.
SIUE will head south to play in the South Alabama Jaguar Classic this weekend. Their next game is Thursday against the University of Denver.
