COLUMBIA, MO — After bursting into the Top 10 on the backs of two consecutive shutouts, the No. 6-ranked University of Missouri football team will host the nation’s only Top 25 showdown at Faurot Field on Saturday, when it takes on No. 24 Boston College.
Missouri blasted Murray State 51-0 and Buffalo 38-0 in its first two games, and BC has done just about the same, taking down then-No. 10 Florida State 28-13, two weeks ago, then dunking Duquesne 56-0 last week.
Kickoff is set for 11:45 a.m., with the game being broadcast nationally on the SEC Network.
Mizzou and BC will meet for just the second time on Saturday. The first matchup came in 2021, when the Eagles pulled off a 41-34 overtime win over the Tigers in a game played in Massachusetts.
Fans might remember that game. Missouri made a last-second field goal to force overtime, but then couldn’t match BC’s score in the extra period, which forced the Tigers to come home with a loss.
Saturday’s matchup will be Mizzou’s first non-conference regular season game where both teams are nationally ranked since it faced No. 20 Illinois in 2008.
Players to Watch: The Tigers still rely on the same studs on offense. QB Brady Cook has 456 passing yards, 84 rushing yards, and four total touchdowns in Mizzou’s first two games.
RBs Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll have combined for 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while WRs Luther Burden III, Marquis Johnson, and Theo Wease, Jr., have 32 catches for 336 yards and two touchdowns — one rushing and one receiving by Burden 00 this season.
Wease set career highs with 13 catches for 149 yards last week.
The main stars for Mizzou have been the members of its “Death Row Defense”, which has helped the Tigers begin the season with back-to-back shutouts for the first time in more than 60 years.
LB Corey Flagg, Jr. leads Mizzou with 11 tackles (seven solo). S Marvin Burks, Jr., has five tackles and an interception, which he got last week. And DL Chris McClellan has seven tackles, 1.5 quarterback sacks, a pass breakup, and a forced fumble.
Johnny Walker, Jr., Khalil Jacobs, and Jahkai Lang all have sacks as well.
For Boston College, dual threat QB Thomas Castellanos is its top player. The junior from Waycross, Ga., has thrown for 340 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for another score in the Eagles’ two wins.
BC’s other top offensive player is RB Treshaun Ward, who leads in the Eagles in rushing (132 yards, one touchdown) and is second on the team in receiving, with four catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, FS Carter Davis, a redshirt freshman from is the leader. He has 12 tackles (eight solo) in two games, while DE Donovan Ezeiruaku leads the team with two quarterback sacks.
