ST. CHARLES, MO — Due to some bad weather around the country, a number of college baseball games got cancelled over the weekend. And though that meant a little schedule than what was anticipated on the first full week of the NCAA baseball season, it did present an exciting new development for local college baseball fans.
The St. Louis area’s two NCAA Division I programs decided to make up for having some games cancelled by deciding to play each other.
So on Wednesday, Saint Louis University and Lindenwood University will meet in an early-season contest at Lindenwood’s Lou Brock Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Both clubs began the year on the road. Saint Louis (3-0) was Port Charlotte, Fla., where it won all three games it played and scored a combined 49 runs, while Lindenwood (1-2) was in Dayton, Ohio, and lost two of three against the Flyers.
The Billikens and Lions had already scheduled a home-and-home series for this season. They’ll play midweek games at Lindenwood on April 23 and at Saint Louis on May 7. This extra game was added to make up for games that were cancelled over the weekend.
Players to Watch: SLU, which was picked to win the Atlantic 10 Conference in that league’s preseason coaches poll, has already shown itself to be a high-powered offensive team. The Billikens averaged 16.3 runs a game in its wins in Florida over the weekend.
Six different players in the SLU lineup are hitting over .400 heading into Week 2, led by sophomore center fielder Hayden Moore, who was named the A-10 Conference Player of the Week, after batting .545, with a 1.182 slugging percentage last week. In three games, Moore, an Edwardsville, Ill. native, delivered six hits in 11 at-bats, including two home runs, while also posting a team-best nine RBIs, scoring seven runs and stealing two bases.
Teammate Austin Neuweg, SLU’s sophomore shortstop, had seven hits in 11 at-bats, with a home run, three doubles, seven RBIs, and eight runs scored. Several other Billiken players looked good at the plate last weekend, including freshman third baseman Graham Mastros, senior left fielder Tyler Fogarty, and senior designated hitter Drew Winters, who all homered over the weekend.
Pitchers Jackson Holmes, Dawson Smith, and Jack Weber all earned wins over the weekend, while reliever Evan Gray picked up his first save of the season.
Lindenwood played three close games against Dayton. The Lions lost the first two, but won the finale.
The Lions weren’t quite as stout at the plate as the Billikens were. Lindenwood scored 11 runs in its three games.
Three batters did stand out for the Lions though. Senior left fielder James Jett had four hits, scored three runs, and stole three bases. Junior third baseman Bryson Arnette had three hits and a team-best three RBIs, while senior center fielder Colin Shea had two hits, including a triple.
Lindenwood’s pitchers looked fierce in its first three games, particularly junior lefthander Eli Brown, who struck out 10 batters in his start on Sunday. Sophomore righthander Easton Rakers came in in relief to get the win in Game 2 on Sunday.
Up Next: SLU will be back on the road this weekend for a three-game series against Western Illinois. The Billikens will play another midweek road game at SIU-Edwardsville next Tuesday, before hosting their own home opener at the Billiken Sports Complex, beginning Friday, March 1, against Le Moyne.
Lindenwood will also be on the road this weekend, for a three-game set in Jonesboro, Ark., against Arkansas State. The Lions will also be home on March. They’ll be hosting a set of games that weekend against Nebraska-Omaha and Bradley.
