COLUMBIA, MO — With the new NCAA basketball season finally underway, two teams that have hoops fans around the country intrigued are the University of Missouri Tigers and the University of Memphis Tigers.
Both teams have talented rosters, featuring players with great size and speed that look like they could really light up the scoreboard. Both clubs also have a bunch of newcomers on their rosters that fans are chomping at the bit to see in action.
Well, after winning their season openers on Monday — Missouri beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 101-79 and Memphis trounced Jackson State 94-77 — the two versions of the Tigers will take on one another and what may be one of the best early season, non-conference matchups of the entire season.
“We’re excited about the test they’ll give us,” Mizzou head coach Dennis Gates said, following his club’s win over UAPB. “They’re a good team and they have good depth, just like us. So it’ll be fun to see what both teams have and how we match up.”
Memphis assistant coach Rick Stansbury, who’s subbing for suspended head coach Penny Hardaway, had a similar sentiment following his team’s win over Jackson State.
“That will grow us up. That will make us better,” Stansbury told reporters, following Memphis’ win on Monday. “Nothing more special than going on the road and winning. That’s our next challenge now.”
Memphis was picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference preseason poll this year. And like Mizzou, they weren’t in the first Top 25 of the season, but they did receive votes. So it should be an interesting battle when the Tigers take on the Tigers, Friday night.
Players to Watch: Missouri is a guard-heavy group that saw four of its wing players score in double-figures, led by the point guard/playmaking duo of Sean East and Nick Honor. East had 21 points in Monday’s win, while Honor had 18, and the two combined for six made three-pointers.
Indiana transfer Tamar Bates came off the bench to add 18 points of his own, including a 10-0 run all by himself where he knocked down a couple of spectacular stepback three’s and drove the lane for a slam dunk that brought the entire Mizzou Arena to its feet.
Noah Carter and Caleb Grill, a transfer from Iowa State, both had 15 points and combined for 13 rebounds, as Missouri played without 7-5 center Connor Vanover, who found out just before Monday’s game that he would have to serve a three-game suspension for participating in an off-season showcase tournament designed to give seniors exposure for professional scouts.
Vanover will also have to miss Mizzou’s next game on Monday, but should be back when the Tigers take on Minnesota on November 16.
Memphis was led by seniors Jaykwon Walton (19 points) and David Jones (15 points) in its opener. The duo combined to hit seven three-pointers and 12-of-23 shots overall. Fellow seniors Jordan Brown and Caleb Mills came off the bench to combine for 21 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks.
Up Next: Mizzou will get the rest of the weekend off before returning to action on Monday, November 13, when the Tigers will host SIU-Edwardsville.
The Tigers will play their first road game when it travels to Minnesota, in a game that will be featured on the BIG 10 Network, on Thursday.
