The 2021 fall volleyball season began three weeks ago, but the University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s team hasn’t played a single match at home yet.
But that will change Friday night, when the Tritons will host a huge Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the Mark Twain Building against No. 21-ranked Rockhurst University.
UMSL will come into the night on a roll, with a 7-3 overall record, after winning four straight matches and seven of its last eight. In fact, the Tritons have only played one match all season that’s gone longer than four sets. And that match was their thrilling season-opener against then-No. 13 ranked Hillsdale.
Rockhurst, which has a 7-4 overall record, is also playing well lately. The Hawks have won three straight matches, including back-to-back three-set sweeps over William Jewell College and Ottawa University.
Players To Watch: UMSL is led by senior libero/defensive specialist Megan Woll, who is coming off being named GLVC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. In the Tritons’ GLVC-opening wins over Illinois-Springfield and Quincy last weekend, Woll tallied 60 digs (an average of 7.5 per set), seven assists, and three service aces.
For the season, Woll leads the GLVC with 218 total digs and a 5.74 digs per set average.
Offensively, UMSL is led by senior outside hitter Charlotte Richards, who leads the conference with a whopping 186 kills and a 4.89 kills per set average. Fellow senior and teammate Kaileen Herman is second in the league with 360 assists and ranks fourth with in the conference with a 9.47 assists per set average.
Rockhurst is led by Averi Vomastic, who is second in the GLVC with 150 kills this season. The Hawks also rely heavily on Justice Wingate, who ranks among the league’s top 10 in both kills (65) and blocks (32).
Up Next: UMSL will follow up Friday night’s match with Rockhurst, with a match against William Jewell on Saturday. That match will also be played at the Mark Twain Building and is set to begin at 3 p.m.
Rockhurst will remain in the area on Saturday and play in West County against Maryville University.
