CONWAY, AR — The NCAA Division III football season will get underway on Saturday, when the Washington University Bears will head down to south to take on longtime foe Hendrix College.

The Bears are coming off their fourth straight winning season after going 8-3 last year. Hendrix went 3-7 last year, after losing three of its last four.

WashU will be led by grad student senior quarterback Matt Rush. a two-time All-CCIW performer, who’s coming off back-to-back 2,000 yard passing seasons. Last year, Rush finished with 2,214 yards and 27 touchdown passes.

Several of the Bears top receivers will be back as well, including Collin Goldberg (50 catches, 819 yards, 9 TDs), Collin Hoyhtya (42 catches, 606 yards, 7 TDs), and Kenneth Hamilton (31 catches, 330 yards, 4 TDs).

Hamilton is also WashU’s top returning rusher. Last year, he had 122 carries for 869 yards and 16 TDs.

Defensively, the Bears will feature a host of new starters, but will bring back big hitting linebacker Dalton Bingman, who had 43 tackles and three quarterback sacks last year.

Hendrix is expected to feature a strong rushing attack led by junior workhorse Jaxon Cobern and sophomore speedster Auvic White. Sophomore QB Jacob Buniff will make his first collegiate start on Saturday. He played in five games as the Warriors’ backup last season.

Up Next: The Bears will be on the road again for their next game. They’ll be off next week, but will play at Millikin University on Saturday, September 16.

WashU’s home opener will be the following week, when the club will host Carthage on September 23.
