CLAYTON, MO — Washington University wide receiver Collin Goldberg had a monster day for the Bears on Saturday.
The 5-foot-10 junior speedster from Atlanta caught six passes for 194 and made big play after big play, on his way to three touchdowns, which lead WashU to a 38-7 win in its home opener at Francis Olympic Field against Carthage College.
Goldberg got the action going midway through the first quarter, when he caught a 52 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Rush to put the Bears up 7-0. His other two scores were the ones that put the game away.
Midway through the third quarter, Goldberg caught a 30 yard pass for a score. That put the Bears up 31-7.
But the really big one was yet to come. That came late in the third, when Goldberg broke free down the sideline. Rush found him with a mid-range pass, and Goldberg did the rest, as he slipped away from a defender then outran everyone else on the field for 97 yard score.
That play was the longest scoring pass in WashU football history, breaking a previous record that had stood for nearly 30 years.
The Bears’ other scores came on a 10 yard run by Levi Moore, a 30 yard field goal by Ross Muchnik, and a three yard fumble recovery return by Salomon Dessalines.
WashU put up 500 total yards — the third straight game in which the Bears reached 500 yards — and held the Firebirds to just 235 yards.
Rush also had a big day. He finished with 20 completions on 28 attempts for 331 yards and the three touchdowns.
WashU’s record is now 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW. The Bears will be back in action next Saturday, when they’ll host North Park at Francis Olympic Field.
Kickoff that day is set for 1 p.m.
