SAUGET, IL — The Gateway Grizzlies scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and six runs in the bottom of the fifth to overcome a 4-0 deficit and storm past the Trois-Rivières Aigles for a 9-7 victory, in the team’s home opener, Friday night at Arsenal BG Ballpark.
Gateway piled up 13 hits, getting three apiece from D.J. Stewart and Gabe Holt, and home runs from Stewart, Cole Brannen, and Edwin Mateo on its way to its fifth straight win.
Trois-Rivières scored the game’s opening run on a home run by Mathieu Vallee to lead off the top of the third. Then, in the top of the fourth, the Aigles got three hits, drew two walks, and had a runner advance on a wild pitch, on their way to adding three runs and going ahead 4-0.
The bottom half of the inning though, is when the Grizzlies got going. Stewart started things off when he launched a shot over the left-centerfield wall for his first homer of the season.
Brannen singled with one out and stole second. Mark Shallenberger walked with two outs. Then both players scored on a double by Mateo that made the score 4-3.

All nine Gateway starters batted in the fifth inning. Holt led off with a double and advanced to third on a hit by Stewart. Holt then scored to tie the game on a hit by Ross Friedrick.
The big play of the night came three pitches later, when Brannen blasted a line-drive that skipped past Vallee in centerfielder. Stewart scored, Friedrick scored, and Brannen was able to race all the way around the bases for an inside-the park home run that brought the entire crowd o 2,481 to its feet.
Trois-Rivières changed pitchers after that, but the Grizzlies added two more runs with two outs, when Mateo blasted his first homer of the season to make the score 9-4.
The Aigles scored runs in the sixth, but Gateway relievers Leoni De La Cruz and Sam Coonrod shut the door after that to preserve the win. Coonrood got the save, after pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Grizzlies and Aigles will play Game 2 of their series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with the series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
