SCHAUMBURG, IL — The Gateway Grizzlies suffered their first series loss of the 2025 Frontier League season, when they lost two of three games over the weekend to the Schaumburg Boomers.
Gateway on the series opener on Friday, 8-1, but lost games on Saturday and Sunday, 4-1 and 5-4.
The Grizzlies are now 10-5 on the season and will look to get back on the winning track when they return to Arsenal BG Ballpark in Sauget to begin a six-game homestand.
On Friday, former Boomer, now Grizzlie third baseman Paxton Wallace returned from the Injured List and had three hits, an RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Gateway offense. Teammate D.J. Stewart, who had been playing third base, but moved to first base, had two hits and a run scored, while Edwin Mateo and Jose Alvarez both had a hit and two RBIs apiece.
Starting pitcher Lukas Veinbergs had his finest outing of the early part of the season, as he went six strong innings and only allowed one un on one hit, with six walks and six strikeouts. It was Veinbergs second win of the season. He is now 2-1 this year.
On Saturday, Gateway had runners get on base throughout the night, but struggled to get them in for runs. Three different Grizzlie hitters, Mateo, Victor Castillo, and Mark Shallenberger each had two hits. But Gateway could only manage one run.
Schaumburg led 1-0 for most of the night, but burst free for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach.
On Sunday, the Grizzlies blew a 3-0 lead and then took a 4-3 advantage in the top of the 10th, before the Boomers scored two runs in the bottom half for a walkoff win that also gave them the series victory.
Rookie catcher Tanner Garrison had two hits and scored two runs. Mateo had a hit and two RBIs.
Pitcher Gaige Vailes, who was coming off his first win of the season, tossed six scoreless innings and only allowed three hits, with a walk and four strikeouts.
Gateway will begin a series against the Florence Y’alls on Tuesday, May 27. First pitch that evening is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
